Global Affairs Canada confirmed Tuesday morning that a first group of Canadians had crossed the Rafah border to seek refuge in Egypt.

“The first group of Canadians left Gaza. Our team of officials has welcomed them on the Egyptian side of the border and is supporting them,” Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly said on X.

According to Global Affairs Canada, about 20 to 25 Canadians were able to cross the Rafah border to reach Egypt. Canadian officials welcome them and stand ready to bring them safely to Cairo.
“We expect up to 80 Canadian citizens, permanent residents and eligible family members to depart Gaza today,” it said.
