ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) — A GCI network outage has temporarily halted service in numerous cities, the network said.
In a Facebook post at 12:27 p.m. Sunday, GCI wrote that the service outage was affecting “wireless voice, data, text and internet services in multiple communities across the state.”
“Our team has identified the issue and our engineers are working to resolve this issue as quickly as possible,” GCI wrote. “Recovery service is our top priority and we appreciate your patience. We apologize for the disruption and will keep you updated throughout the day as we work to resolve the issue.”
As of 4:10 p.m. Sunday, some of the network issues were resolved, according to GCI spokeswoman Heather Handyside.
“Services are being restored nationwide,” Handyside said in an email. “Some customers may still experience disconnects as services come back online on the network.
A pre-recorded message on the company’s customer service line states that tech support calls are not required at this time.
Customers inside and outside of Anchorage reported problems with the network on Sunday. According to a customer in the Northwest Arctic Borough, “Only landlines within the same city can call each other”.
According to the Anchorage Police Department, the outage prevents Anchorage customers from getting through to a 911 operator. To reach emergency services, APD says to call 3-1-1 or (907) 786-8900.
The Wasilla Police Department and Palmer Fire & Rescue encourage their GCI and Verizon community members to call (907) 352-5401 Option 6 to reach emergency services.
