Gender identity: Legault understands parents’ concerns but calls for calm

Although he is concerned about protecting minorities, François Legault still “understands” that parents and citizens are concerned about transsexuality. The Prime Minister is not ruling out changes to the rights of trans and non-binary people after following the work of a committee of bright minds on the issue.

The day after tense demonstrations over gender identity in the streets of the metropolis, François Legault called for calm. “Yesterday I saw a slip-up in Montreal,” he lamented Thursday during a press scrum in the National Assembly. As Prime Minister, I am committed to being a bulwark against the extremes.

Quebecers are “moderate” and such polarization between two opposing camps is not commonplace, he emphasizes. François Legault wants this debate to be calm and non-confrontational.

“As a society, we have a duty to protect people who belong to minorities, and on the other hand, I can understand the worried parents and the worried citizens,” the Prime Minister continued.

He recalled that his government would set up a “Committee of Wise Men” on gender identity by December.

In 2016, Quebec passed laws protecting the rights of trans and non-binary people.

At the end of the Committee of Wise Men’s work, could some of these rights be taken away or could Quebec review certain laws? François Legault hasn’t ruled it out. First he lets the committee do its work.

“It’s a relatively new debate. I think there are a lot of Quebecers who are waking up and saying: Oops, I didn’t see this debate coming, so it’s worth asking questions,” he stressed.
