The soap opera star Sonya Eddy has died. She was 55.
Octavia Spencer announced on her Instagram that the “General Hospital” actress passed away on Monday. She did not provide information on Eddy’s cause of death.
“My friend @sonyaeddy passed away last night. The world has lost another creative angel. Her legions of @generalhospitalabc fans will miss her πποΈ,β Spencer, 52, commented on a professional headshot by Eddy.
“My thoughts and prayers are with her loved ones, friends and fans!”

ABC also confirmed the news to Page Six in an emailed statement.
“‘General Hospital’ is sad to announce the passing of actress Sonya Eddy, who embodied her character… tough but compassionate head nurse Epiphany Johnson… and became an instant fan favorite and a beloved member of our ‘GH’ family when she came to us for the show in 2006,β it said.
Executive producer Frank Valentini also told us he was “heartbroken at the loss of the incredible Sonya Eddy,” whom he loved as a friend.
“The lights in the middle of the nurses’ station will be a bit dimmer now, but their spirit and light will live on both on the show and on our set,” he continued. “On behalf of the entire ‘GH’ cast and crew, we extend our deepest sympathy to their family, friends and fans. She will be greatly missed.β

Eddy began her career on the ABC soap opera in 2006. She portrayed the character Epiphany Johnson, a no-nonsense head nurse who was the mother of the late Stan Johnson, who got involved with the mob.
Eddy also played the role in the hit SOAPnet spinoff General Hospital: Night Shift.
Eddy has also appeared in TV shows and films such as Seinfeld, Patch Adams, Reba, Monk, Joan of Arcadia, CSI, Glee, Castle and Fresh Off The Boat ” on .”

Celebrities and fans flooded Spencer’s announcement with comments of sadness and sympathy.
