General Oligui takes office as interim president of Gabon

Following the military coup in Gabon, the new ruler, General Brice Oligui Nguema, will be sworn in as interim president before the country’s constitutional court on Monday. The 48-year-old is expected to lead the small Central African country after the military ousted longtime head of state Ali Bongo Ondimba following his questionable electoral victory. Nguema has already announced that he wants to democratize the state institutions that were dissolved after the coup.

The military justified last Wednesday’s coup with a “serious institutional, political, economic and social crisis” in the country. General Oligui accuses the deposed Bongo of corruption. The Bongo family ruled the oil-rich country for more than 55 years.
