Generation Z and love: “They are less unconventional than we think” – TVA Nouvelles

The vast majority of Generation Z young people born after 1995 still believe in the traditional couple.

This is according to the results of a light survey sponsored by dating app Fruitz, which revealed that of the 500 young people surveyed, only 3% said they were in a non-exclusive relationship and 75% saw themselves in a serious relationship . in the future will be based on the values of trust and loyalty.

According to Chiara Piazzesi, professor at UQAM’s sociology department, these results show that the idea that new generations always go against the ideologies of their elders is not always true.

“I would rather say that they are less unconventional than we think,” she explains. That is, we tend to always see younger generations as generations that are necessarily at odds with all the values and references of previous generations.”

“This data clearly shows that this break is not that strong,” she adds. On the contrary, for those who fear that younger generations no longer want to commit, are afraid of commitment or only want short-lived relationships, this survey shows that this is not the case.

These results are not related to the fact that there were many divorces among their parents, Generation C.

“Compared to the divorces of previous generations, there may be some disappointment, but I feel that previous generations must still have had the ideal of a long-term, stable couple with children,” she continues. So I don’t know if that will change, but rather that this ideal will be consistently supported.”

The survey also shows that only 56% of young people say they have children.

“There is perhaps a little pessimism about the living conditions we want to have in the future,” says Ms. Piazzesi. There is perhaps a little pessimism that is also related to the environmental challenges that we are becoming very aware of in a very specific and concrete way, but it is very difficult to speculate based on just one number. »
