Geno Smith continues to lead the quarterback competition in Seattle. Despite not winning the job for the first week of the regular season, he will start the preseason opener on Saturday.

Via TheAthletic.com’s Michael-Shawn Dugar, trainer Pete Carroll told reporters Tuesday that Smith remains in the lead for the full-time appearance, and that he will be awarded the contract in Pittsburgh this weekend.

Based on Saturday’s mock game, some thought Drew Lock had gained ground over Smith. Apparently that is not the case, at least not yet.

I’m positive Carroll would love to beat former Seahawks starter Russell Wilson with his former understudy on the first Monday night of the season. Remember, Smith played well last year when he was commissioned after Wilson picked up a finger injury against the Rams.

For the Seahawks, it was all about system, not star quarterback. Wilson had wanted the system to be all about him. The season begins with a convincing clash of philosophies, and Carroll is more likely to be right if Smith is the starter. He’s the next man, replacing the man who wanted out and who finally got his wish.
