Gentleman Jack is CANCELED by HBO after two seasons… but BBC claims it is “in discussions” about the show’s future despite the slump in ratings
Gentleman Jack was canceled by HBO after just two seasons, but the BBC has confirmed it is “in talks” about his future.
The inter-channel co-production, which aired between April 2019 and June 2022, starred Suranne Jones as landowner Anne Lister, who develops a romance with another woman – potentially dangerous in 1832 Britain.
UK ratings for the historical drama had plummeted following its return earlier this year, with the final season finale garnering 3.20 million viewers while that of the debut series drew 6.14 million.

This was announced by the US cable broadcaster Deadline. “When we began this journey more than five years ago, we knew that series creator Sally Wainwright had a uniquely compelling vision, and it has been extremely gratifying to see Anne Lister’s journey resonate with viewers.
“We are incredibly grateful to Sally, the impeccable Suranne Jones and Sophie Rundle, and the entire cast and crew for bringing Anne and Ann’s story to life.
“We would also like to thank our partners at the BBC and Lookout Point for working together over two remarkable seasons.”

All eyes were on Anne and Ann as they settled at Shibden Hall as wife and wife, determined to unite their lands and become a strong couple.
During a recent appearance on Lorraine, the actresses admitted they became “like an old married couple” and lay in bed together in their pajamas “like two grannies drinking beer” while shopping online.
Speaking of the way Gentleman Jack portrays their same-sex relationship on screen, Suranne (who plays Anne Lister) said, “She doesn’t shy away from every detail of her marriage. They have no certificate to bind them, no child to bind them.’
And off-screen, the pair became incredibly close as Sophie (who plays Ann Walker) revealed, “We ended up being like an old married couple.”
The actress also confessed that they “shopping online a lot” to while away the time during filming.
Suranne added: “We spent a lot of time in bed like two grannies drinking beers in our pyjamas. It was during the Covid times and it said ‘What shall we buy? We’re not going anywhere.”
