George and Charlotte change their names: what the princes will be called at the new school

An exciting time full of changes and news begins for William and Kate’s children, starting with school. George, Charlotte and Louis, aged 9, 7 and 4 respectively, will indeed be attending the prestigious Lambrook School in Berkshire in September.

Known across the kingdom by the title Royal Highness, the little ones will transform in the classroom first name and they are called simply George and Charlotte Cambridge by their companions, after the name of their paternal duchy. The same applies to Louis, who will start his last year of kindergarten in September.

While in the past the offspring of royalty were educated at home by a multitude of teachers, Prince Charles was the first to break with this tradition and attend a public school from the age of 8. The same happened with his sons William and Harry who, to solve the surname problem and avoid the overly cumbersome name Windsor, were incorporated simply as Wales after the name of the Principality of Wales.

On their wedding day, William acquired the title of Duke of Cambridge while Harry acquired the title of Sussex. However, unlike their British cousins, Archie and Lilibet Diana, who are not princes, will go by the surname Mountbatten-Windsor.
