George RR Martin Says Future ‘Game of Thrones’ Projects Were ‘Influenced’ By HBO Max Changes

Future Game of Thrones spinoffs may not be safe from the ongoing changes at HBO Max, according to George RR Martin.

In a blog post Wednesday, the author wrote that some of his planned shows in the Game of Thrones universe had been “put on hold” by the streamer. After HBO’s parent company WarnerMedia merged with Discovery in April, HBO Max’s content list thinned to cut costs, contributing to the cancellation of shows like “Love Life,” “Minx,” and “FBoy Island.”

Though the Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon had the biggest season finale HBO has seen since the original series and was renewed for Season 2, Martin wrote that other projects in development weren’t as set in stone .

“Some of these are moving faster than others, as is always the case with development,” Martin wrote. “None has been given the green light yet, although we’re hoping…maybe soon.” A few have been shelved, but I wouldn’t agree they’re dead. You can take something off the shelf just as easily as you can put it on the shelf. Of course, all the changes at HBO Max have had an impact on us.”

While Martin did not specify which projects have been shelved, there are at least six projects that have been reported to be in development, including the prequel series Tales of Dunk and Egg, the Princess Nymeria-centric 10,000 Ships ‘ and a Jon Snow spinoff in which Kit Harington is linked to Star.

HBO Max officials did not immediately respond to Variety’s request for comment.

Martin also took some time in the post to praise the movies and shows he’s enjoyed this year, shouting out “The Banshees of Inisherin,” “The Sandman,” and Season 2 of “The White Lotus.”

“Brilliant performances from Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson,” he wrote of The Banshees of Inisherin. “A powerful story that I will remember for a long time … but damn, so sad. I see people calling it a comedy. For real? OK, but that’s dark humor.”
