The 35-year-old was arrested for fighting and was serving time in the Fulton County Jail in Atlanta. The Family Attorney’s Complaint

An inmate was eaten alive by insects and bed bugs in a US prison. This was reported by Michael Harper, family attorney for Lashawn Thompson, the 35-year-old African American man who was found dead in his cell at the Fulton County Jail in Atalanta, Georgia.

Thompson died in September after three months in prison, and photos provided by the family’s lawyer – write the American media – show a cell in deplorable condition and pictures of the 35-year-old man’s corpse with his face and torso covered in insects.

He was arrested for a fight last June and diagnosed with schizophrenia, Harper said again, stressing that he was physically healthy when he entered prison: There is no excuse for admitting a mentally ill prisoner to prison leave, leave to die. They did nothing to help him – the lawyer continues – they found him dead in his cell, lying there, infested with bedbugs and lice. And the one who killed him. Thompson’s brother, Brad McCae, said the victim’s family was horrified to see the pictures.

absolutely awful, even animals couldn’t fit in that cell and they practically left him there, Harper continued. They were supposed to take Thompson to the medical observation ward, but that never happened, the attorney added, holding up the coroner’s report of a severe bed bug infestation. It’s no secret that the dilapidated condition of the current facility makes it incredibly difficult to meet the goal of providing all inmates and staff with a healthy, clean, well-groomed, and wholesome environment, the sheriff’s office admits, stressing that this is not the case one of these is the large number of cases that illustrate the urgent need for a modernized and expanded psychiatric department. The same sheriff’s office has previously announced that it has opened an investigation into the circumstances of Thompson’s death, and upon completion, a review will be sought from the Georgia Bureau of Investigations to determine if prosecution will be necessary.

No obvious signs of trauma were found, the coroner’s report said, stressing that the body was covered in bed bugs and concluding that the cause and manner of death have yet to be determined. However, Attorney Harper pointed the finger at prison staff, who saw Thompson’s deteriorating health and did nothing.
