German industry backs Habeck’s plans to reduce gas consumption

Industry president Siegfried Russwurm stated that renewables must be massively accelerated. Habeck wants to take additional steps to save gas.

German industry supports Economy Minister Robert Habeck (Greens) plans to reduce gas consumption due to throttling of Russian gas supplies. Industry president Siegfried Russwurm said: “We have to reduce gas consumption as much as possible, every kilowatt hour counts. The priority should be to fill the gas storage tanks for the next winter.

Germany should open up as many other sources as possible. Companies would have to switch to oil, for example, where that could be done. “But some industrial processes only run on gas. The lack of gas threatens to paralyze production,” said the president of the Federation of German Industries.

Gas power generation must be stopped and coal-fired power plants pulled from the reserve immediately, Russwurm said. “Currently, this is about short-term measures to secure energy supplies, not a date for phasing out coal in 2038 or 2030.” Renewables would have to be massively accelerated. “Germany must finally say goodbye to petty, petty crippling debates and blocking attitudes and stop holding back on the expansion of renewable energy. Politicians and management must turn on the turbo as soon as possible for the designation of new areas for wind farms.” and solar and for faster approvals.”

Habeck wants to take additional steps to save gas and increase precaution. He described the situation as serious. To counter this, the use of gas for power generation and industry must be reduced. More coal-fired power plants should be used. The filling of the gas tank must be promoted in order to be prepared for the winter.
