German investigators have launched a nationwide raid against members of the climate activist group Last Generation, the Munich public prosecutor announced on Wednesday.

According to the authorities, a total of 15 properties in seven federal states were searched as part of the raids on behalf of the Bavarian State Criminal Police Office (LKA) and the Munich Public Prosecutor’s Office.

Four searches took place in Berlin, three in Bavaria and three in Hesse. The authorities announced that there were other actions in Hamburg, Magdeburg, Dresden and Schleswig-Holstein.

The Munich public prosecutor’s office announced that “due to numerous criminal complaints from the population” they had initiated investigations against a total of seven defendants between the ages of 22 and 38 “accused of forming or supporting a criminal organization”. The reports have been received since mid-2022.

Specifically, the defendants are accused of organizing a fundraiser to fund “more crimes” for Last Generation, advertising it on their website and raising at least €1.4 million ($1.5 million) in donations.

According to the LKA, two defendants are also suspected of having tried to sabotage the Trieste-Ingolstadt oil pipeline in April 2022.

Last Generation activists have been blocking roads across Germany for about a year by sticking themselves to the streets. Other campaigns targeted artworks. The climate protection organization states that its protests are exclusively non-violent.
