German teenager dies after classmate’s attack

The minor succumbs to his injuries after the gun attack in a German school. The suspect, however, was arrested.

In the city of Offenburg, in southern Germany, there was an unexpected attack between young schoolmates. Following a gun attack, the minor succumbed to serious injuries in hospital, police and the Baden-Württemberg city prosecutor said on Thursday. The alleged perpetrator, who was the same age, was detained in a classroom after the attack – investigators assume that there was a “personal motive” for the crime.

The suspect entered a classroom at lunchtime, approached his classmate who was sitting at the time of the crime and shot him at least once with a firearm, investigators said. “As a result, he suffered the most serious injuries,” he said in a statement. Police then received several emergency calls.

The school was practically isolated. The victim was taken to hospital after the attack. Initially there was no information about the details of the injury. The underage suspect, a German, is being forensically examined, investigators said. The reason for the attack will likely be personal. As a police spokesperson close to the crime scene added, initial findings indicate that there was a prior relationship between the alleged perpetrator and his victim.

The Public Prosecutor’s Office requested an arrest warrant for manslaughter. The suspect must be presented to the responsible investigating judge on Thursday so that an arrest warrant can be issued, the investigative authority said.

According to police, around 180 students were removed from the school. The young people were attended to by trained personnel and were later able to go to their parents’ home, police said. Offenburg is located in the state of Baden-Württemberg.

The alleged perpetrator had even more ammunition on him

According to information from the DPA, the attack would have occurred directly in the suspect’s classroom. An adult not from the school is said to have confronted the young man – the background initially remained unclear. The intervention was a fortunate circumstance – more could have happened. The alleged perpetrator had ammunition with him.

In Germany, students aged 15 to 16 are typically taught in the affected 9th grade. According to its own information, the school in question is a special education and counseling center focused on learning. Students are taught in 15 classes.

Also on Wednesday, two boys at a school in Hamburg threatened a teacher with some type of firearm, triggering a large-scale police operation. After four hours, the emergency services managed to get everything right. Almost at the same time there was also an alarm at another school about a threatening situation. Here too an educational force was threatened. In this context, shortly afterwards, four boys aged 11, 12, 12 and 14 were arrested and, later, a 13-year-old teenager, and a total of three suspected toy weapons were seized. A 12-year-old boy and a 13-year-old boy are suspected of being responsible for the threat in Blankenese. (APA)
