The Ethiopian Ministry of Health received the delivery, also carried out by the Bavarian Office for Africa and Menschen für Menschen (MfM), worth 1.2 million euros to strengthen the local health system. This includes ventilators, diagnostic equipment and laboratory equipment. A press release from the GIZ country office also states that operating theaters, machines in the intensive care unit, delivery, ward and reception facilities are involved.

Health agency chief Lia Tadesse said the donation will help the ministry overcome setbacks in the health system due to the conflict and scarcity of material resources.

“Medical devices not only help restore healthcare services, but also improve the quality of clinical patient care and the delivery of critical care services in our healthcare facilities,” he added.

For his part, Berlin’s Ambassador to Addis Ababa, Stephan Auer, stressed that the African country had made commendable progress in healthcare.

Auer emphasized that this valuable contribution not only fits perfectly with the long-term funding strategy of German development cooperation, but also further strengthens the national health system.

The Director General of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, Dirk Meyer, stated that the availability of the most modern medical equipment will help to rebuild care in the regions affected by the conflict.

Better treatment options are not only necessary for the treatment of infectious lung diseases such as Covid-19, but also for patients with other diseases, emphasized Meyer.
