According to information from the German Press Agency, German government leaders intend to impose a tax on kerosene for domestic flights in Germany. Furthermore, tax incentives for agricultural and forestry companies, i.e. for agricultural diesel, must be eliminated. This is part of the agreement on the 2024 federal budget.
To date, kerosene used in commercial aviation is exempt from energy tax. In addition, agricultural and forestry companies can request a refund of part of the energy tax paid for their fuel consumption.
“There is a small ray of hope in today’s decisions that kerosene for particularly climate-damaging air traffic will no longer remain tax-exempt,” said Lena Donat, mobility expert at Greenpeace. Jost Lammers, president of the Federal Association of the German Aviation Industry, criticized the kerosene plans. This means that traffic is being transferred abroad and Germany is losing competitiveness, said Lammers.
