The leader of Germany’s far-right AfD, Tino Chrupalla, was reportedly shot dead today on the sidelines of a rally he was holding in Ingolstadt, Bavaria. It is currently not entirely clear what the dynamics of the accident were, but it is certain that Chrupalla was taken to the hospital, where he is currently and will spend the night. The party spoke generally of a “violent incident” that occurred during the politician’s contact with the local population and described Chrupalla’s conditions as “still to be clarified.” After a few hours of silence, the Bavarian police issued a statement confirming that Chrupalla was rescued behind the scenes of the Ingolstadt stage at around 4.30 p.m. today and “treated on the spot”, although – a big secret – an “obvious Injury “existed” was not recognized. To clarify the ambiguity about what happened even to the police, they are appealing to “those who took photos or videos” of the moments of the alleged incident to make them available to the police. A local newspaper, Bayerischer Rundfunk, reported rumors that Chrupalla had been injured with a needle. A reconstruction that has not yet been confirmed. Other rumors, reported by another local newspaper, the Donaukrier, instead speak of the far-right politician collapsing after he took some selfies with some sympathizers. An anti-racist counter-demonstration apparently took place in the affected area, in which the Social Democratic mayor Christian Scharpf also took part as a speaker.
The (supposed) concern about the other AfD leader
Just yesterday, Tuesday, October 3rd, the other AfD co-chair Alice Weidel canceled her participation in a demonstration in Bavaria, citing “security reasons”. “There was a security incident last weekend. “Ms Weidel and her family were taken by the authorities from their private apartment to a safe place as there were increasing signs of an attack on her family,” an AfD spokesman said later on stage at the demonstration. It’s a shame that Spiegel later found out that Weidel used the long weekend to celebrate German unity (October 3) and went on vacation to Mallorca.
