NEW YORK — Gerrit Cole strutted off the mound of Yankee Stadium after beating the team in the seventh inning Tuesday night, while wagging his right index finger at the Mariners’ bench. It was in response to some out-of-school rants, but you might as well have said, Not tonight, boys.

With his club coming off a disappointing run in Boston over the weekend, the star had to act as a stopper. Cole rose to the challenge, conceding just four hits and one run in a performance of eight strikeouts as the Yankees ended their four-game losing streak with a 3-1 win over the Mariners.

“It wasn’t easy, I can tell you that,” said Cole. “They put some balls in play and hit some balls hard that went our way. But they fought us all night. The best thing we did was control the strike zone, move the fastball around, and throw a lot of quality shots.”

Billy McKinney hit a home run in two runs and Anthony Rizzo had three hits and an RBI for the win, just the Americans’ fifth in 13 games since Aaron Judge crashed into an outfield wall June 3 at Dodger Stadium. Harrison Bader hit a single and stole a brace on his return from a right thigh muscle strain.

But the story of the night was Cole, who improved his season record with a 2.64 ERA to 8-1 and allowed two runs or fewer in 13 of his 16 starts.

“He puts a lot of emphasis on his preparation and game planning, on how he attacks the boys,” Rizzo said. “Whenever he’s on the hill, I feel very confident.”

On Tuesday, Cole started for the seventh time this season in the wake of a Bombers loss; The Americans are 7-0 in these games, with Cole posting a 4-0 record and a 1.87 ERA.

“It’s definitely nice to give him the ball,” manager Aaron Boone said. “It’s definitely comforting that Gerrit is out there because we know we really want to get a win and stop the bleeding. He went out there and was in full control.”

The aforementioned extracurricular actions, which featured Cole’s Dikembe Mutombo finger wags, occurred in the seventh inning when Mariners second baseman Jose Caballero was sitting at the plate.

Seemingly upset with Caballero’s routine, particularly his exploitation of a batter time-out between pitches, Cole’s 2-0 pitch sailed high over the batter’s head and hit the net behind home plate.

“Sometimes a high fastball can be a really effective throw,” Cole said flatly. “I need to change eye level.”

Caballero said that Cole “didn’t like the way I was manipulating the pitch clock, but he was just excited.”

“The rules apply to all of us and I just had to be ready at eight seconds and that’s what I do. It’s my routine,” Caballero said. “I’m just going to keep doing what’s good for me and I hope they get used to it.”

Boone said Cole’s throw was “elevated” over Caballero’s head [Seattle’s] Antenna.” The punch ended in a strikeout, and Cole said he noticed Mariners manager Scott Servais wagging his finger at him. Cole responded with a similar move, adding a mocking grin.

“Your manager had a few apt words for me as I left the field and he waved his finger at me. So I wagged my finger at him,” said Cole.

Cole added that he couldn’t hear anything Servais said.

“I didn’t tell him anything either. I just saw him wagging his fingers,” said Cole. “This is the first time an opposing manager has pointed the finger at me.”

For at least one night, Cole’s efforts and a few early punches pocketed the digits that pointed to the Yankees’ front office.

The damage was done against right-hander George Kirby, a native of Rye, NY, who defeated the Yanks in eight scoreless innings in Seattle on May 31. Clay Holmes recorded his last five outs, making his ninth save.

“We need every win,” Rizzo said. “It feels good to be back home and starting this homestand with a good vibe.”
