Yesterday, for Ghostbusters Day, fans saw a plethora of new content and announcements from the popular paranormal franchise toys to television to new films. Ghostbusters Day is always observed on June 8th; the day the original 1984 film premiered in theaters. For a long time it was just another anniversary, but now, well… it’s all a celebration, am I right? And that means announcements.

In addition to Netflix’s animated television series announced yesterday, Afterlife co-writers Gil Kenan and Jason Reitman announced last night that an animated feature film is also in the works. It is directed by Jennifer Kluska and Chris Prynoski of Titmouse Studios, written by Brenda Hsueh, and will explore new characters and new storylines in the Ghostbusters universe. According to Twitter, Reitman said, “This was my father’s passion project and it’s easy to see why. The world of the unknown can only be properly explored through the limitless reach of animation.”

There is also another live-action film in the works, continuing the events of Afterlife. Kenan and Reitman will also return, and while there’s no title, it’s codenamed “Firehouse.” “The last time we saw Ecto-1,” Reitman teased the film, “it was driving back to Manhattan, home of Ghostbusters.”

And there are immersive experiences and more! The previously teased Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed – described only as “coming soon to consoles” – was mentioned, with Kenan adding that “in addition to dressing up as a Ghostbuster, players can also play as a ghost”. The really cool announcement, however, was the Ghostbusters VR Academy for Hologate. Described in a tweet as a “location-based, fully immersive training simulator,” it appears to be a pop-up virtual reality arcade that will be available in “400 locations” worldwide. There will also be a VR game for Meta Quest 2 and PlayStation VR2.

Additionally, Ghostbusters is returning to comics with a “Limited Edition Series,” as described in a tweet. It will be in-canon and will be released by Dark Horse Comics in late 2023. That’s a lot of Ghostbusters!
