Giants News, 1/18: Eli’s Advice to Daniel Jones, Hurts, More Headlines – Big Blue View

Good morning, New York Giants fans!

Giants-Eagles X Factor: How Healthy Is Eagles QB Jalen Hurts?

Mark Schofield discussed the impact of Hurts’ health on the Philadelphia offense on Wednesday’s episode of the podcast “Valentine’s Views.”

“It hurts them a lot [if they can’t use the designed runs]’ Schofield said. “Jason Kelce [Eagles center] said on his show with his brother that their entire offense — run game, pass game — starts with Jalen hurts. Everything that does builds on Jalen Hurts.

“The stuff they do in the passing game, the RPO stuff they do, obviously the drop back stuff they do. Obviously the quarterback plays a big part there,” Schofield said.

“But so much of what they do in the running game and some of their game action elements builds on his ability to run as a core principle. If they aren’t able to rely on that stuff if he’s not healthy enough where they feel they can use his threat as a runner to build up some of that stuff that’s a big part of their playbook is that is kind of out of whack window.”

“His health is a big storyline in this game.”

Eli Manning gave ‘little pep talks’ to Daniel Jones ahead of Monster Playoff debut | Giants.com

During Monday’s Wild Card edition of the ManningCast, Manning revealed he gave Jones a “little pep talk” — but only after the current signal caller came up to him.

“With Daniel, I never got through to Daniel … he got on the line and said something like, ‘Hey, first playoff game. Anything I need to know about?’ And I said, ‘Just play how you played. You don’t suddenly come into the playoffs and say I have to try to change something or do something new. I said, ‘You’ve played great all year.'”

“He’s like, ‘What about the speed? Is it faster in the playoffs?’ I say, ‘That’s just something people say because they have to say something. The speed is the same. No one suddenly gets faster for this game. Only when people play harder will you play harder. When you have a third and a fifth, you will prepare to go down first. People just go to the whistle.”

Jones might not be the “perfect” franchise quarterback, he “might be just what the Giants need… assuming they can agree on something sensible, it makes a lot more sense for the Giants to keep Jones and build around him.” than trying to replace him and start over with someone else.”

Daniel Jones has silenced many critics (including me) this year. I’m not going to put him in an elite tier or anything, but this was certainly his best year with perhaps his worst supporting cast in the passing game. Jones finished the regular season with an overall grade of 78.9, a passing grade of 73.1, and a rushing grade of 82.3 — with the overall and rushing grades being team-best grades. Jones is facing a contract extension, so there’s some uncertainty, but with the Giants still alive in the playoffs, it’s hard to imagine anyone else standing center for them in 2023.

Why Brian Daboll’s work with Daniel Jones rivals his development of Josh Allen | the athlete

Daboll came to New York with a reputation for developing Bill’s quarterback Josh Allen from a raw rookie to an MVP candidate. In some ways, Daboll’s work with Jones is more impressive. Allen was unformed clay with a wealth of talent, so Daboll was able to build him from scratch.

But Jones already had three years of NFL coaching and four years at Duke with quarterback guru David Cutcliffe. Jones was hardly a blank canvas, but Daboll and his staff pushed the right buttons to get the best out of Jones.

Why Giants should trust the Eagles in NFL playoffs The 33rd team

The Giants should be feeling great in their divisional matchup against the Eagles after getting stuck with Philadelphia in Week 18 despite resting their key starters. Eric Mangini believes New York has enough momentum to sneak away with a win.

Eagles’ Jalen Hurts not worried Giants aim for shoulder | ESPN.com

“It’s football. I have a bounty on me every week when I go out on the field,” said Hurts, seemingly unimpressed when asked about the possibility on Tuesday. “So I go out there and just play my game, and whatever happens, happens.”

How the Eagles pushed (and sometimes pulled) Jalen Hurts to the top of the NFC | the athlete

According to TruMedia, the Eagles have sneaked (we defined a QB sneak as a designed rush from a quarterback under center with 2 yards or less to convert) 32 times this season with a 90.6 percent conversion rate. That’s more than any team has crept in in a season this millennium (as far back as TruMedia data goes) and more than double the number the Eagles had last season (14, 92.9 percent revenue).

“They took it to another level,” said Giants defense coach Andre Patterson. “One guy is on each cheek and one is behind and all three are pushing him forward. That makes it really difficult to quit.”
