Supermodel Gigi Hadid was arrested for marijuana possession while on vacation in the Cayman Islands last week, her representatives confirmed on Tuesday.
According to a local Cayman Marl Road report, Hadid and her friend Leah Nicole McCarthy were stopped by customs officials on July 10 after arriving in the islands on a private jet.
“During the search of their luggage, ganja and paraphernalia for consuming ganja were found in the luggage of both passengers,” the report reads. “The quantities were relatively small and apparently intended for personal use.”
Hadid purchased the marijuana legally in New York City with a medical license, her rep Ronde Coletta told The Washington Post, adding that medical marijuana use has been legal in Grand Cayman since 2017.
That’s right. However, it is illegal to enter and exit the territory with cannabis. Hadid and McCarthy were arrested, taken to a detention center, and later released on bail.
Marl Road reported that two days later they were charged with “suspicion of importing ganja and importing paraphernalia for ganja consumption”. They later appeared in summary court, pleaded guilty, and agreed to pay a $1,000 fine.
“Her record remains clear and she has enjoyed the rest of her time on the island,” said Coletta. The model later shared a series of photos from the trip on social media.
When asked for comment from U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the Post referred the Cayman Islands Customs and Border Protection Agency, which said it would release more details on Tuesday.
