About 50 people injured
A heavy hailstorm ravaged northeastern Spain, some of the pieces were more than ten centimeters in diameter, as reported by the UWZ. About 50 people were injured. Video recordings in Spanish media show how the huge hailstones hit cars or swimming pools.
According to the UWZ, the storm moved on Tuesday night between 7pm and 8pm from the eastern Pyrenees in the Franco-Spanish border area southeast of the Mediterranean Sea. North of Girona, the storm became increasingly intense, especially La Bisbal d’Empordà, where hailstones with diameters of up to twelve centimeters fell from the sky.
Child died in hospital
The one-year-old girl was hit by a four-inch hailstone on Tuesday afternoon and taken to hospital with serious injuries. The 20-month-old child died there.
According to Tomas Pucik, an ESSL expert, this is probably the first direct hail death in Europe since 1997. Others have suffered head injuries, cuts and some even broken bones from the massive hailstorm.
