goes to court to take “Brazil’s biggest soap opera pirate off the air

Globo went to court and carried out an operation against the Carol Novelas site, which sells around 500 complete Brazilian soap operas on the Internet for fans of the genre. The channel’s lawyers say that Leandro da Silva Evangelista, owner of the website and target of the operation, is “the biggest soap opera pirate” in the country because of the robustness of his offering. Even rare properties not available on streaming are being sold.

The report had access to the lawsuit documents, which are being heard jointly before the 8th Civil Court and the 1st Commercial Court of the TJSP (Court of Justice of São Paulo).

On the website, Evangelista states that he has a collection of multiple plots from all channels. In addition to Globo, some foreign productions are also available, including from other television channels, such as SBT, Record, Band and the extinct Rede Manchete (19831999).

Even the pioneer Tupi, the first Brazilian broadcaster, has a soap opera in its program. The plot is “The Seagulls” (1979), one of his last productions before it went off the air in 1980.

The variety and quantity of objects in the collection impressed Globo’s lawyers, who conducted a search to remove the content, which was illegally made available on the Internet and in violation of copyright law.

In order for the customer to have access to the collection, Leandro charges a onetime fee of R$220. Once the amount is paid, Carol Novelas’ team of three sends the interested party a file on Google Drive that entitles them to any production they want. The report managed to access the content. The picture quality is high even in older soap operas from the 1980s and 1990s.

Lost failures and successes ignored by Globoplay

Globo pointed out that there are productions on Evangelista that are currently only in the station’s archive. This is the case with “Olho no Olho,” a 1993 soap opera starring Tony Ramos. She talked about paranormal beings who had special powers, as in the prelude to “Os Mutations” (2008) on RecordTV. The conspiracy gained a satanic reputation at the time and was never repeated or made available.

Another example is “O Amor Está no Ar” (1996), the first soap opera starring Rodrigo Santoro in his career, which was considered a major failure on Globo’s six o’clock program. One of the production’s arguments was aliens and the possible existence of life outside of Earth. His performance was so poor that he ended early.

Also in the full catalog is De Corpo e Alma (1992), Gloria Perez’s first solo primetime soap opera on Globo, which is marked by the murder of her daughter, actress Daniella Perez (19701992), by her casting colleague is. the actor Guilherme de Pádua (19692022).

But the catalog is not just about lost or failed plots. There are also forgotten hits. This is the case with the first version of “Ti Ti Ti”, dated 1985 and signed by Cassiano Gabus Mendes. A public phenomenon at the time, the series has not been broadcast by Globo since 1988. Globoplay only has the remake of the production, which aired in 2010.

Another successful example that is on the site and not shown on Globoplay is “Hipertension”, a seven o’clock production from 1987 that was never broadcast on Globo again. The plot was written by Ivani Ribeiro (19221995), the same author of “A Viagem” (1994), and has the peculiarity that Cesar Filho, currently a journalist and presenter at Record, plays one of the main roles.

Currently airing storylines such as “Terra e Paixão” and the recently completed “Vai na Fé” (2023) are also available.

Globo asks for money and removal from the air

To punish Evangelista, Globo demanded his immediate removal from the air and the prevention of sales of his catalog, which the broadcaster considered “unfair competition.” The company is demanding compensation of R$100,000 for moral damages.

When contacted by the Report, Globo said he would not comment on ongoing legal cases. The report attempted to contact Carol Novelas’ blog via the email provided on the page. Two messages were sent with no response. (Gabriel Vaquer / Folhapress)
