The Golden Globes returned on Sunday night (January 7) with a stunning, star-studded ceremony.

The annual awards show, held in Beverly Hills, has been pushed into the background in recent years after a 2021 Los Angeles Times investigation found that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (the awards show's voting body) did not have a single Black member.

However, this year the Globes were back in their usual Sunday slot on CBS and were hoping to regain viewers. Broadcast live from the Beverly Hilton Hotel, A-listers including Taylor Swift, Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence and Kylie Jenner brought much-needed star dust to the beleaguered show.

Oppenheimer, Barbie, Poor Things and Anatomy of a Fall were among the films that won multiple awards. Christopher Nolan won his first Globe after six nominations, while Barbie surprisingly won best film in the musical/comedy category for Poor Things.

Meanwhile, Beef, The Bear and Succession were the big winners in the TV categories.

According to Paramount, viewership is up 50 percent since last year

The 81st annual Golden Globe Awards averaged 9.4 million viewers, up 50 percent from last year, according to Nielsen statistics.

The number represents the ceremony's largest audience since 2020, a year before an LA Times investigation found that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (the awards' voting body) did not have a single Black member.

The HFPA dissolved and the Globes brand was purchased by Dick Clark Productions (owned by Penske Media, the parent company of Hollywood trade publications such as and Variety). CBS bought the rights to broadcast the show at a huge discount, and the awards were now voted on by “more than 300 member journalists from around the world, half of whom are ethnically and racially diverse,” according to the Globes Foundation.

According to last night's data, CBS will be very happy with their investment.

Jo Koy responds to Taylor Swift's viral reaction to his joke about her

During his opening monologue, Koy appeared nervous but tried to lighten the mood by referencing Swift's highly publicized show of support for her boyfriend, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce.

“The big difference between the Golden Globes and the NFL? We have less camera footage of Taylor Swift at the Golden Globes… there's just more to see here.”

As the camera cut to a close-up of Swift, she could be seen pursing her lips with a decidedly icy expression before taking a sip of her drink.

Speaking to GMA3 the morning after the ceremony, Koy said of his hosting experience: “I had fun. You know, it was a moment I will always remember. It's a hard space. It was a tough job, I’m not going to lie.”
