The triumph of cinema (Oppenheimer), the swansong for a certain model of prestige television (Succession) and a little kick from the ass on the landerneau of French cinema (Anatomy of a Fall): the Golden Globes once again brought the state to the forefront of the entertainment industry on Sunday, January 7, during its 81st edition, which traditionally took place at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, near Los Angeles.
Oppenheimer, nominated eight times, won five awards: Best Dramatic Film, Best Director, Best Actor (Cillian Murphy), Best Supporting Actor (Robert Downey Jr.), Best Soundtrack. A consecration for Christopher Nolan, the hunter of the “dangers” of streaming cinema.
On the series side, the final season of Succession won four awards: best drama series, best actress (Sarah Snook), best actor (Kieran Culkin) and best supporting actor (Matthew Macfadyen), with The Crown only receiving the female supporting role (Elisabeth Debicki, the Princess Diana is playing, also in her final round. Succession is the latest variant of the high-end television model that has been enforced since the 1990s by the pay channel HBO, whose content has been taken over by the video-on-demand service following its merger with Warner Bros Max. Discovery. And perhaps the ultimate avatar after months of restructuring, layoff plans and budget cuts imposed by Hollywood's most hated CEO, David Zaslav.

Third triumph, that of Justine Triet, whose Anatomy of a Fall won the prize for best foreign film and best screenplay. Twice on stage, the director did not play politics like when she was awarded her Palme d'Or – nor like all the other winners – but she was able to enjoy the moment while the committee responsible for presenting a French film in the best foreign film category at the Oscars, The Passion of Dodin favored Bouffant, causing controversy. The campaign for the Oscars, whose nominations will be announced on January 23, is looking good even without France's support.
A second chance for the Golden Globes
As every year in Hollywood, the balance between studios and streaming services within the list will be scrutinized and analyzed. Ultimately, it's a Yalta as standard. Netflix leads the way with five trophies thanks to the success of Acharnés (Best Miniseries, Best Actress, Ali Wong, Best Actor, Steven Yeun). Warner Bros. Discovery won four trophies with Succession and Disney, through its streaming service Hulu and its FX channel, won three statuettes thanks to The Bear, which won everything on the comedy side: best series, best actress (Ayo Edebiri) and best actor ( Jeremy Allen White).
