NEW YORK, JANUARY 16, 2024 – Goldman Sachs Group, Inc. (NYSE: GS) today reported net sales of $46.25 billion and net income of $8.52 billion for the year ended December 31, 2023 ending fiscal year. Net sales and net income were $11.32 billion and were $2.01 billion in the fourth quarter of 2023.
Diluted earnings per common share (EPS) were $22.87 in 2023 and $5.48 in the fourth quarter of 2023. The average return on equity (ROE) was 7.5% in 2023 and the annual return on capital was 7.1% in the fourth quarter of 2023.
Goldman Sachs also provided an update on the company's simplified strategy and outlined key goals for 2024 and beyond. These include:
- Leveraging One Goldman Sachs to serve clients exceptionally well;
- Leading world-class, differentiated and long-lasting businesses; And
- Invest to operate at scale.

Selected items related to the implementation of Goldman Sachs' narrower strategic focus, as well as the FDIC special assessment fee, impacted the company's full-year and fourth-quarter results. In 2023, these items reduced net income by $2.8 billion, EPS by $8.04, and ROE by 2.6 percentage points. In the fourth quarter of 2023, these items reduced net income by $283 million, EPS by $0.83, and annualized ROE by 1.0 percentage points.
