The Google Pixel 7a was recently launched as the successor to the Pixel 6a, bringing numerous improvements such as new photo sensors and a revised design. But the release of this smartphone, welcomed in our ranks with a very good 8/10 rating, does not eclipse its predecessor, the Pixel 6a, which still remains a safe bet in the efficient photophone market. In addition, it has the advantage of being significantly cheaper than when it was first launched.

An excellent camera phone for this price range
Like most Pixel phones, the Pixel 6a obviously scores with its photo capabilities. Two sensors are housed in the rear module of the device: a main sensor with 12.2 megapixels (f/1.7) and a second one that allows shooting at an ultra wide angle (114 degrees) with 12 megapixels (f/2.2). Google knows it well: there is no need to multiply the sensors to ensure excellent photo quality. The proof with the Pixel 6a, which takes very nice pictures, especially during the day. The brand has also neglected the high color saturation that other manufacturers are used to.
Of particular note is the portrait mode, perfectly managed in particular thanks to the good depth management, proving the effectiveness of Google’s algorithms. The night vision mode stands up to detailed photos and well-lit scenes just as well. However, a longer exposure time is required before the picture can be taken. Finally, the ultra-wide-angle lens also offers good performance – but without being its great trump card.
Some performance hits
In order to ensure excellent photo quality while offering a reasonable price, Google had to make some performance concessions. So inside the Pixel 6a is a Google Tensor chip that focuses more on optimizing certain functionalities – especially around the photo or security – than on pure performance. So don’t expect to launch greedy 3D games by pushing the graphics to the maximum at the risk of slowing down. The autonomy is a bit average, but the 4,410 mAh battery should last at least a whole day. On the other hand, we may also regret that the maximum charging power does not exceed 18W. Charging will therefore be very slow…
However, the Pixel 6a makes up for this in the design: This smartphone is very comfortable to hold and is neither too heavy nor too big. It is equipped with a 6.1-inch screen that also benefits from the excellent contrasts of OLED with a Full HD+ resolution (1080 x 2400 pixels) and a 20:9 ratio. On the other hand, the brightness is quite pleasant. However, the maximum refresh rate is blocked at 60 Hz, which is a shame for the smooth display.
