Google will offer an ecosystem similar to Apple’s Locate application, based on all Android devices in the world, that will help you find a lost connected object.
The announcement was expected, Google had hidden it behind all of its presentations on its artificial intelligence solutions. The company finally used its Google I/O 2023 conference to start unveiling the new version of its Android 14 mobile operating system.
Surprisingly, Google hasn’t particularly focused on smartphones, but rather on two other types of devices that will benefit from alternative versions of Android: tablets and smartwatches. It must be said that for several years Google has been trying to offer a wide ecosystem of products that work with each other using Google Fast Pair or Nearby Sharing.
The first announcement concerns a new version of Find my Device (Locate my Device, in French) that will allow you to easily locate your devices. Similar to what Apple offers with the Locate application, the device search function works based on global geolocation information for all Android devices available worldwide.
Harassment risk prevention features
Also like Apple, this feature can notify users when a nearby device isn’t yours and is following you. A way to prevent possible cases of harassment, as we saw with the Apple AirTag.
This new version of Find my Device will be available throughout the summer, without further details for now.
