“Past Lives” won the top prize at the 2023 Gotham Awards on Monday night, with the film winning three awards for best feature film on the night.
Three-time best feature nominee “A Thousand and One” won the breakthrough director award as director AV Rockwell gave an emotional speech about the challenges of telling stories about particular identities.
Although “All of Us Strangers” wasn’t nominated for best feature, it was nominated for the first four awards but went home empty-handed.
Anatomy of a Fall won two awards: Best International Feature Film and Best Screenplay. Four Daughters won the award for best documentary film.
In the Lead Actor and Supporting Actor categories, Lily Gladstone (nominated for “The Unknown Country” and not “Killers of the Flower Moon”) and Charles Melton (May/December) beat the star-studded, gender-neutral nomination lists and both seemed surprised by their victories.
Beef, which had the most nominations in the TV categories with three nominations, won the TV Awards with two awards (two nominations were in the same category). The limited series won breakthrough series under 40 minutes, and star Ali Wong delivered a standout performance in a new series, beating her on-screen counterpart Steven Yeun. “A Small Light” won the breakthrough series over 40 minutes. A little light went into the night with two nominations alongside double nominees Anne Rice’s Interview with The Vampire, I’m a Virgo, Swarm, The Last of Us, The English and Dead Ringers.
In addition to the competition categories, the Gotham Awards recognized a number of films with previously announced awards: Killers of the Flower Moon received the Gotham Historical Icon & Creator Tribute; Barbie was awarded the Global Icon & Creator Tribute; Ferrari received the Icon & Creator Tribute for Innovation; Rustin received the Cultural Icon & Creator Tribute for Social Justice; Air took home the Visionary Icon & Creator Tribute; and Maestro received the Cultural Icon & Creator Tribute.
Author Alex Convery accepted the invitation on behalf of Air, noting, “The film is really about knowing your worth and fighting for it, and that’s something we experienced firsthand as artists when we did We stood on the picket lines for over 200 days this summer. “It was long and tiring, but we did it and showed the world that we know what we are worth.”
Adam Driver presented his honor to Ferrari director Michael Mann and told a story about how Mann left his wallet at a 7-Eleven and, instead of waiting at a red light to return to the store, got out of his car and told a major about the Away ran LA intersection. “It was actually a moment where I felt like I was really seeing Michael; If he’s doing that with the lost time of his wallet, how does that translate to being on a movie set?” Driver explained that the director “doesn’t want anything to get in his way, including himself.” Man dedicated the award to the late Ferrari screenwriter Troy Kennedy Martin, saying: “He is truly the heart and core of innovation.”
Rustin star Colman Domingo and White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre presented the social justice tribute and praised the Netflix film about March on Washington organizer Bayard Rustin. Director George C. Wolfe accepted the award and said, among other things: “Democracy is a muscle, and if you don’t use it, it atrophies and becomes dysfunctional.” We understand that we must invest in democracy every day or else it will mediocrity and evil will come.”
He added: “What Bayard also believes in, what this room is about, is the power and power of the collective.”…We all dream of creating a work that changes the world. The next best thing is making a movie about someone who actually did it. …You are honoring an amazing person [in Rustin] Whoever’s on Netflix right now, so watch the damn movie.”
Brian Williams introduced the film to the maestro and praised it. He said he saw him “24 hours ago and thought of little else.”
Williams added: “It’s safe to say [actor-director-co-writer] Bradley Cooper has created his American masterpiece.”
Cooper, speaking to Bernstein’s adult children Alex and Jamie, said in part: “The journey we have taken to tell this story as authentically and truthfully as possible would never have happened without Jamie, Alex and Nina.” [Bernstein, Leonard Bernstein’s children].”
And he found it fitting that the film was celebrated at the Gotham Awards, as he said of the Bernsteins: “New York was their city.”
Killers star Robert De Niro led the tribute to the Martin Scorsese-directed film. However, there was an awkward moment when De Niro began reading his prepared remarks and then noticed his comments had been edited. After a video package in which Scorsese and Osage boss Geoffrey Standing Bear discussed the film, De Niro insisted on reading his unedited remarks, which included a number of specific political comments, including remarks about former President Donald Trump.
“Truth is not the same as truth and facts are being replaced by conspiracy theories,” De Niro said in part. “Lying has become a tool in the charlatan’s arsenal. The former president lied to us more than 30,000 times in his four years in office, and he continues his campaign of retaliation.”
About Trump, he added: “Despite all his lies, he can’t hide his soul.” The former president showed his disrespect by offensively using the term “Pocahontas,” referring to Trump’s popular nickname for Senator Elizabeth Warren.
De Niro appeared to blame Apple for the changes to his speech.

Gotham Award nominees are selected by committees of film and television critics, journalists, festival programmers and film curators.
Separate juries made up of writers, directors, actors, producers, editors and others directly involved in the filmmaking will determine the final award winners.
Recent Gotham Award winners have included Oscar winners Everything Everywhere All at Once, CODA, Nomadland, Marriage Story, American Factory, Moonlight, Spotlight and Birdman.
