Government Change Resumes in Guatemala Amid Crisis

Guatemala City, October 4 (Prensa Latina) Teams appointed by the Government of Guatemala and President-elect Bernardo Arévalo resumed today the transition process amid the political crisis caused by the actions of the Ministry of State (MP).

However, in a statement, the current board first emphasized that this activity took place “in an atmosphere of optimism and trust” with the participation of Ms. Karin Herrera, the next vice president after the August 20 elections.

At the meeting at the National Palace of Culture, the Transitional Commission presented to the country’s current government the proposed schedule for the sectoral meetings for the transmission of information from the ministries and secretariats, he described.

Details of the meetings would be announced through official communication channels, in accordance with the instruction of the head of state Alejandro Giammattei to “carry out an efficient, orderly and transparent transition,” he said.

The resumption of the transition process came after that nation’s highest official called on Arévalo to restart the transition process after he suspended it on September 12.

In the text, he mentioned that the change of command that President Giammattei’s government has been preparing since the beginning of 2023 represents an unprecedented event before the transfer of presidential command.

This also contributes to strengthening democracy in Guatemala and making it easier for the new government to make decisions from January 14, 2024, he commented.

Arévalo traveled to the United States the day before, which he had on his agenda but canceled last Sunday due to tensions over the Special Prosecutor’s Office against Impunity case against the Supreme Electoral Court.

The 48 cantons of the Totonicapán department and social organizations maintain this Wednesday for the third day in a row the blockade of the roads in Guatemala, in rejection of the measures promoted by the deputy.

The mobilizations of the traditional authorities and the people jointly demand the resignation of Attorney General Consuelo Porras and other officials.
