Grammy-winning recording engineer shot dead by SWAT in Nashville

A Grammy-winning recording engineer accused of holding his wife and stepdaughter at gunpoint was killed after a SWAT team member shot him dead in Nashville Thursday afternoon, Variety reports.

Police shot 54-year-old Mark Capps, who was armed in his doorway and was wanted for aggravated assault and aggravated kidnapping at the time of his death, according to local reports.

He was the son of the late Musicians Hall of Fame inductee and Grand Ole Opry guitarist Jimmy Capps, who played lead guitar in the house band.

Capps took his 60-year-old wife and 23-year-old daughter into their family room at gunpoint around 3 a.m., Metro Police spokesman Don Aaron said, per News Channel 5. “He told them if they were going to call anyone , he would kill her,” Aaron said. “They were very afraid of him and his actions towards them by not letting them go.”

As he fell asleep around dawn, police officers said, the two women fled the residence and headed to the Hermitage Ward, where officers gave statements and issued warrants for Capps’ arrest. After the warrants were issued at 1:55 p.m., the SWAT team arrived at the Nashville home.

“Shortly after the warrants were issued, SWAT prepared for him to barricade himself inside,” Aaron said. “He came to the door with a gun in his hand. He was fatally shot. We have since learned that cameras were monitoring the outside of the house. He may have seen her outside the residence. They were in SWAT gear and clearly identified as members of the police department.”
