Grant Denyer recalls the night he went missing in Sydney’s CBD at the height of his opioid addiction wearing only underwear – resulting in Ms Chezzi ‘suffering from PTSD’
Grant Denyer has recalled one of the darkest days of his opioid addiction.
The 45-year-old TV host told The Jess Rowe Big Talk Show this weekend that he once disappeared while on painkillers.
His wife Chezzi searched for him for hours after he ran off in Sydney’s Chinatown at night wearing only his underwear.
“One night, for whatever reason, I wanted to drink some scotch, so I just walked around town in my underwear and got lost in the fire escape on the way back to the apartment.
“I didn’t know where my apartment was and fell asleep on the fire escape. “It took Chez three or four hours to find me,” he said.

Grant went on to say that he hallucinated of people breaking into his home and sexually abusing Chez, and that his wife suffered “post-traumatic stress disorder” from the experience of caring for him during that time.
“When you’re under the influence of drugs of this type and you’re in so much pain and you close your eyes at night, you immediately have the worst nightmares, and it happens every night,” Grant said.
“When you wake up, you can’t tell what was real and what wasn’t.”
The former “Family Feud” host struggled with a high-profile painkiller addiction in the past after breaking his back in a freak monster truck accident in 2008.
In the accident, Grant suffered a vertebra that shattered into 11 pieces, and doctors feared he would never walk again.
Denyer previously opened up about his painkiller addiction during a discussion with his roommates on the show I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here!

He explained he once threw eggs at his wife Chezzi when he was hungry during his recovery.
“I decided to crash off it, and that was…when I went missing…” he told Abbie Chatfield, Alli Simpson and Toni Pearen.
“Buddy, I threw eggs at her [Chezzi] one night. I cracked it for some reason. I was hungry, in pain, confused and just started throwing eggs at her.
“She didn’t deserve this, but you just can’t stop.”
In 2014, Grant attended a wellness center in Thailand specializing in the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder and fatigue.
The popular presenter made a remarkable recovery, returning to television screens in triumph and eventually winning a Gold Logie.
