21 Italian neo-Nazis were arrested yesterday evening at Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport in Athens. This was reported by the Kathimerini website, according to which those arrested had reached the capital to take part in the far-right rally planned for this afternoon in the suburb of Neo Heraklion, north of Athens.
Kathimerini does not provide any information as to which Italian organization the detainees belong to.
Today’s rally was organized by local far-right networks such as the Hellenic Front and the Athens Autonomous Organization to commemorate the death of two activists from the now-defunct neo-Nazi Golden Dawn party on November 1, 2013, shot dead in front of a party headquarters: those responsible for the murder was never identified.
In 2020, Golden Dawn leaders were convicted of participating in a criminal conspiracy and the party was dissolved. According to Greek police, authorities had gathered information about the escape of 21 far-right Italians who had responded to appeals from rally organizers across Europe.
Given the risk of possible clashes, the Attica General Police Directorate today banned both the memorial rally and other demonstrations announced by members of Greek anti-fascist organizations.
