“We confirm the death of one person,” said a police spokesman.

The ANA news agency and the public broadcaster ERT, citing the rescue service, reported that there were four injured people who had been transferred to two hospitals in the city.

Fire brigade and ambulance on site

The public television broadcaster ERT initially claimed that five people were seriously injured, without this information being confirmed by the authorities.

A large-scale rescue operation with fire brigade and ambulance on site is underway.

The reasons for the collapse are currently unknown. The bridge is on the road that connects the port of Patras in the Peloponnese peninsula in the south-west of the country with Athens.

According to Efthymis Lekkas, the president of the earthquake protection organization OASP, who was quoted by broadcaster ERT, the bridge had stability problems that were known to the authorities. According to ERT, the restoration work began in 2021 and cost more than six million euros.
