Germany’s Approval Breaks the Deadlock: The statement says nuclear energy can help achieve climate neutrality targets

After months of France lobbying for greater recognition of nuclear power, EU ambassadors on Friday adopted a statement putting “other non-fossil energy sources” on a par with renewables in decarbonization efforts.
Earlier, Germany, Austria and Luxembourg had opposed the inclusion of nuclear power as a “low-carbon” energy source in EU renewable energy rules, fearing it could divert investment from other options such as “wind and solar”.
But France’s threat to block approval of EU climate targets forced the European Commission to issue another statement recognizing the role of nuclear power, which Germany ultimately backed.
The document states that the Commission “recognizes that other non-fossil energy sources, in addition to renewable energy, also contribute to achieving climate neutrality by 2050 for Member States that choose to use such energy sources”.
