Gregory Charles reviews 100 years of musicals with the show

Gregory Charles reviews 100 years of musicals with the show “7”.

Gregory Charles will review a century of musicals 7a new interactive exhibition expected at Place des Arts in Montreal this fall.

From Mouline Rouge! From Cats to Les Misérables, The Sound of Music, The Phantom of the Opera and other Chicagos, Show 7 revolves around major works carried by the voices of seven singers. Gregory Charles is flanked in each of these vocal appearances by Audrey-Louise Beauséjour, Marc-Antoine Gauthier, Klara Martel-Laroche, Frédérique Mousseau, Mathieu-Philippe Perras and Gabrielle Roy-Lemay.

There are also four dancers, an orchestra and a choir of around a hundred people. In short, it is a major production that the virtuoso promises. And he also believes that the topic is more accessible than many people think.

“A lot of people think that music culture is a geek thing. But they don’t realize that some of their favorite songs have something to do with music cinema. Shallow? It’s a star is born. New York, New York? It comes from the film of the same name,” explains Gregory Charles.

From classic to modern

If some of the titles mentioned revive Broadway and seventh art classics, the Show 7 team wants to cast a wide net; She will be able to follow the special requests of the audience even in the most current, darkest or most modern corners of musical comedy here and elsewhere. Examples? Gregory Charles talks about works like “Six” and “Some Like It Hot,” productions that are currently drawing crowds to the Big Apple.

Quebec titles – we think of Starmania, Don Juan or Notre Dame de Paris – could also be revisited on the Place des Arts stage during the performances.

“Anything can happen. In fact, the seven of us have over 500 musicals to cover together. We’re ready for anything,” advises Gregory Charles.

The interactive character allows viewers to influence the program of each evening. Each of them is given a musical questionnaire in which they are asked to indicate their favorites, special requests and perhaps challenges for the artists on stage.

Shared enthusiasm

A concept that makes these six actors dizzy.

“It’s definitely a challenge going on stage without knowing exactly what to expect, what you’re going to sing and in what order. But at the same time it’s something super exciting,” says Audrey-Louise Beauséjour.

The same goes for Mathieu-Philippe Perras, a singer that audiences discovered with La Voix at the beginning of the year.

“Not only does it provide a good dose of excitement for us; The people in the audience will feel it too. Knowing that we make the songs they want to hear and that the show they go to is unique is special,” he says.

There are currently seven shows scheduled for Gregory Charles and his band, all of which will take place next November at the Place des Arts in Montreal. But the maestro does not hide his ambitions for this major project, evoking the desire to transport it to cities like Quebec and Ottawa.

“I’m definitely thinking about it. But we’ll see what happens next. “Right now it’s all about delivering the show and showing everything we can do with it,” he says.
