GRETA played a key role in Andrew Tate's arrest, but it's not Thunberg

Andrew Tate was arrested by Romanian authorities on Thursday.

When news of the arrest of controversial media personality Andrew Tate and Twitter spat with Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg hit the headlines, netizens were quick to point out that it was ultimately GRETA that put the far-right celebrity on the Romanian authorities’ radar.

GRETA stands for the Expert Group on Combating Trafficking in Human Beings and is a European body that monitors the implementation by the contracting parties of the Council of Europe Convention on Combating Trafficking in Human Beings.

This 15-member panel is currently in the spotlight for the jailing of Andrew Tate after a year-old press release from the group went viral. Civil rights lawyer and Twitter user Alejandra Caraballo tweeted a screenshot of the Council of Europe’s website. The screenshot referred to a press release dated June 3, 2021, in which GRETA (the council, not the activist) called on Romania to ensure that trafficking offenses result in effective sanctions.

Now, a year and a half later, Romanian authorities are in the spotlight for arresting four people on suspicion of human trafficking, including Andrew Tate.

The irony of an organization called GRETA that brought down Andrew Tate didn’t escape the notice of netizens, who responded with memes and laughter to Caraballo’s tweet. As Twitter user viralsmile noted, “The writers did a really great job with this 2022 finale.”
