Greta Thunberg arrested by German police during a demonstration against a coal mine

Climate activist Greta Thunberg was arrested by police on Tuesday, January 17, after attending an anti-coal demonstration in Lützerath, Germany for several days.

The image goes around the screen. We see the young Swedish environmental activist Greta Thunberg being carried by several German police officers.

The young woman was arrested while taking part in a demonstration against the expansion of a mine in Lützerath, a village in western Germany, reports CNN.

According to Skynews and BFMTV, police said this is the second time Greta Thunberg has been escorted by police due to incidents on the fringes of the protest.

This time the young activist “stormed” with a group of demonstrators onto the edge of the colliery, which the police said was particularly “steep and extremely dangerous”.

Several days of protests

The Swedish activist took part in this demonstration, which has mobilized several thousand people since Friday 13 January. The site has been occupied by opponents of the mining project for more than two years.

In her speech, Greta Thunberg castigated this project to expand the coal mine and invoked a “betrayal of current and future generations”.

“Germany is one of the biggest polluters in the world and must be held accountable,” she had launched in particular, as communicated by France 24.

“We are in Lützerath, a German village that is threatened with demolition due to the expansion of a colliery. People have been resisting for years,” she also tweeted the day before.
