Grimes revealed in an interview published this week that her longtime partner Elon Musk – the world’s richest man – sometimes lives “below the poverty line.”
Speaking to Vanity Fair, the musician recalled how they once found a hole in her mattress when they lived in Los Angeles. Instead of buying a new one, Musk offered to bring a mattress from her home.
“Like, the bro didn’t even buy a new mattress,” she told the publication.
“Bro doesn’t live like a billionaire. Bro lives below the poverty line at times,” Grimes said, according to Vanity Fair. “To the point where I was thinking, can’t we live in a very unsafe $40,000 house? Where the neighbors are like filming us and there’s no security and I’m eating peanut butter for eight days in a row?”

Grimes also spoke to Vanity Fair about how meeting the world’s richest man made her feel “trapped between two worlds.”

In the same interview, Grimes revealed that she and Musk have a secret second child, a girl they call “Y”. The couple’s eldest son, X Æ A-Xii, pronounced “X AI Archangel”, was born in May 2020. Y, whose name is Exa Dark Sideræl Musk, was conceived by a surrogate mother and is Musk’s seventh child.
In September, Musk told Page Six that he and Grimes had broken up after three years of dating. The billionaire was recently spotted with Australian actress Natasha Bassett.
