In March 2022, Tommy announced he had recovered from throat cancer while lending his celebrity status to raise the profile of an NHS campaign to promote cancer screening.

He recalled: “I went to my GP for another issue and while I was there he discovered this lump in my throat which he was a bit worried about.

“He said maybe it was nothing other than that he would rather I go and have it checked and unfortunately it turned out to be cancer.

“I had to go in immediately and have surgery to remove it. I am now fully recovered and even playing soccer again!

“If something in your body doesn’t feel right, contact your GP practice and make an appointment. Whatever the outcome, the NHS is here to help.”

In 2002, Tommy became scared of breast cancer when he found two lumps on his chest.

The father of three immediately sought medical advice and although his doctor said it was probably nothing, Tommy was sent to have the lumps checked.

The TV builder told The Mirror at the time: “I was a bit of a guy about the whole thing. I just buried myself in my work and then drove to the day surgery where the knots were removed under general anesthesia.

“It was only then that I realized that this could actually be serious and I could have breast cancer like my relatives.”

Luckily for Tommy, test results showed the lumps were benign, but he confessed it was “a little wake-up call.”

Tommy rose to fame when he joined the BBC television gardening program Ground Force in 1997 alongside Alan Titchmarsh.
