Grupo Los Van Van had to abandon a concert when a musician fell ill on stage

New York, May 26 (EFE). – Cuban group Los Van Van’s presentation this Friday in New York had to be cut short when bassist Juan Carlos Formell fell ill on stage about 45 minutes into the show.

Shortly after the bassist, all the musicians left the stage at the Lehman Center for the Performing Arts in the Bronx, but the curtain fell after about ten minutes, raising public expectations as to whether the show would be canceled.

Up until that moment the audience, mostly Puerto Ricans and Cubans, had given themselves over to the dancing and singing with the group, although the sound in the room wasn’t the best.

The Cuban group kicked off their tour of the United States on Friday in New York, which will take them to the San Francisco Carnival tomorrow and to San Diego (California) on Sunday before continuing the tour in Europe.

After half an hour, the so-called “Rolling Stone of Cuban music” returned to the stage to continue the show without the bassist, who, according to EFE, was taken to the nearest hospital.

Four ambulances and two fire engines arrived at the theater.

Without comment, they immediately began “Sandinguera”, one of the favorite songs of the audience, who danced and sang standing up again with the band, who then performed “Me mantengo”, songs composed by the group’s founder. Juan Formell (1942-2014).

At that time, Robertón, one of the singers, introduced Sebastián, who he said was a Uruguayan bassist living in New York. Lele, another singer, stated that the musician “came to dance with Van Van and ended up playing with us.”
