Guadeloupe: Carnival frenzy with clashes, several police officers injured

Police officers injured during these festive weekends between January and February were targeted with guns or stones thrown at them.

It is a famous carnival that takes place in Guadeloupe over two months every year between the beginning of January and the end of February. Between Epiphany and Ash Wednesday, thousands of spectators gathered to watch the carnival parade. But this year, authorities have registered more clashes and violence against police, according to AFP. “19 weapons were confiscated and 15 officers [de la police, Ndlr] were injured,” said the territorial head of the criminal police.

The security forces were specifically fired with weapons or stones thrown. Several local media reported that the guns seized were Glock “automatic handguns” and, most notably, one of the police officers targeted during the carnival was dragged several meters by a scooter, according to Radio Caraïbes International. The facts happened during the Abymes City Parade in early February.
