Guatemalan MLP party fights for presidential card registration

Speaking to the judges, the party’s secretary-general, Cirilo Pérez, stated that “it’s not a plea, it’s a right,” referring to the rejection of his candidates Thelma Cabrera and Jordán Rodas by the Supreme Electoral Court’s (TSE) Citizens’ Register. .

Despite the fact that registrations were closed the day before, the CSJ has scheduled a hearing for today to hear the arguments of the MLP, represented by Pérez and the group’s lawyer, Cástulo Gómez. The court could make a final decision within 72 hours, allowing or definitively refusing Cabrera and Rodas to participate in the elections next June 25th.

“It is with great respect that we request that this amparo be finalized and resolved and that the TSE register the MLP tying and allow the TSE 24 hours to provide the appropriate credentials,” Gómez said.

The defense focused on three elements, first, that the former human rights lawyer has his valid and current settlement, which was issued December 20.

Second, Gómez assured that the circular issued on January 19 directing the Citizen Registry to verify the authenticity, validity and legitimacy of the interim certificate of non-existence of fee entitlements (settlement) borders on the principle of legality because it puts an over the Regulation that goes beyond the constitutional mandate.

The third element outlined indicates that this document appears on the comptroller’s page as valid for Rodas, and they also asked that the reasoned vote of TSE Judge Blanca Alfaro be taken into account in their resolution.

Today’s hearing took place on the same day that the campaign began, and hours earlier the MLP bases presented their candidates for the National List, Central District and Guatemala District MPs, as well as the mayoralty form.

From their headquarters in this capital, they launched the “Proclamation for the Liberation of the Peoples”, raising several axes to reach the Plurinational Constituent People’s Assembly for the Good Life.

Cabrera and Rodas participated virtually, and both called on the CSJ judges to do their jobs.

“The system is afraid, the time has come for us peoples,” warned the former presidential hopeful in 2019 when she unexpectedly came fourth in the elections.

For his part, Rodas said the Togados will make history this week if they clear the registry.

“We are fed up with corruption and that is why they are afraid of us,” he stressed.
