Guga Chacra: “External” and “internal” pressure led Israel to accept an agreement with Hamas for the release of hostages

For Guga chakraIsrael was the one who had to give in the most for this agreement to come about. Writing in Jornal da Globo, the commentator highlighted the “external” and internal factors that influenced the Israeli government’s decision.

“Irael probably had to give in more than Hamas at this point. There was external pressure from the United States, including from other countries close to Israel, such as France and the United Kingdom, countries with which Israel has established relations. And an “internal problem is that a large part of the victims’ families and a large part of Israeli society want the hostages to be released,” analyzed Guga.

However, Guga Chacra points out that the Israeli prime minister also faced resistance from members of farright parties who opposed the agreement.

“On the other hand, there was resistance to the agreement, from members of the farright parties, because of the collision of his government, but in the end he agreed,” the commentator emphasized.

The agreement calls for a ceasefire of at least four days, which Tel Aviv says will begin the moment the first child held hostage crosses the border back into Israel.

  • Hamas is sending back 50 hostages all women or children at a rate of 10 to 12 per day, guaranteeing at least a fourday ceasefire.
  • The release should begin this Thursday (23).

Hamas has kidnapped at least 240 people.

  • In return, Israel releases 150 Palestinian prisoners.
  • And it allows three hundred trucks carrying fuel, medicine and food to enter the Gaza Strip every day.

This agreement is the result of strong international pressure, including from the USA. Benjamin Netanyahu said it was a “difficult decision.”
