Gus Malzahn OK after Auburn car crash sending motorcyclists to hospital

Central Florida coach Gus Malzahn was involved in a car accident with injuries Monday night in Auburn.

A motorcycle was involved in the accident, according to reports from the Auburn Police Department.

The crash happened near Hamilton Road and Ogletree Road, according to the WRBL.

UCF Athletics released the following statement to WVTM 13 on Tuesday:

“Our football coach Gus Malzahn was involved in a car accident last night in Auburn, Alabama. Gus had traveled to Auburn on Monday to be with his wife Kristi while they were helping Kristi’s mother (after Kristi’s father died). Gus wasn’t hurt in the accident.”

The UCF football team resumed spring training Tuesday. Malzahn is scheduled to return to the team on Thursday,

Police confirm that Malzahn was driving the vehicle that the motorcyclist collided with. The motorcyclist was airlifted to a trauma center in critical condition, but police told WRBL the person is expected to recover.

WFTV’s Joe Kepner reports Malzahn called UCF sporting director Terry Mohajir after the wreck to let him know what had happened.

Malzahn traveled to Auburn on Monday to be with his wife Kristi as they helped Kristi’s mother. Kristi Malzahn’s father, Wesley Otwell, died two weeks ago at the age of 75, she said on Facebook.

AuburnSports.com’s Brian Stultz was the first to report the incident, citing multiple sources.

Malzahn, 56, will begin his second season with UCF after eight years with Auburn. The Knights ended last season 9-4.

In January, Malzahn announced that his wife Kristi was hospitalized with an unknown infection. She was released in February.
