Guterres in Kiev: “War is absurd in the 21st century”

After his pendulum mission, the UN chief comes to the conclusion: “Putin will decide when the war will end.” Joe Biden wants to make 33 billion dollars available for Kiev.

As UN Secretary General and previously as head of the UN refugee agency, António Guterres saw much suffering and destruction. Ahead of his meeting with Volodymyr Zelenskiy, the 73-year-old Portuguese – pro forma the world’s moral conscience – on Thursday completed a site inspection in Bucha, Borodjanka and Irpin, the partially devastated and burned-out suburbs around Kiev.

Afterwards, Guterres became emotionally agitated. “I imagine my family in the ruins; my granddaughters running away in panic and part of the family that could be dead. War is absurd in the 21st century. It is evil and unacceptable.”
