In an episode of The Art of Being Well podcast, the 50-year-old artist – who has appeared in films like “Iron Man” and “Shallow Hal” – relies on intermittent fasting and eating his first “meal” around noon to swallow.

“In the morning I’ll take something that doesn’t spike my blood sugar, so I’ll have a coffee. I really like soup for dinner, I often have bone broth for dinner,” she says.

In the afternoon she does an hour of exercise, either a walk, a home workout or Pilates, before going to the sauna. Her dinner, which she says she eats early in the evening, consists mostly of vegetables.

“Supporting my detoxification is very important to me,” says the actress, who follows a Paleolithic diet.

“So coffee and bone broth are meals now?”, “Mother of all almond mothers”, “It literally looks like getting ready for a colonoscopy”: Predictably, the actress’ revelations have sparked a lot of comments on social networks.

No detox possible

Contrary to what Gwyneth Paltrow claims, there is no way to detoxify the body, says nutritionist Tania Valiquette.

“A person who has a healthy liver and kidneys doesn’t need help detoxifying their body,” she points out.

While this is far from the first time Gwyneth Paltrow has made such comments, they worry Tania Valiquette, who runs the blog La Maudite Nutritutrice.

“I find it so damaging to all the people who see it and think she’s beautiful, who think she’s nice and hear what she says,” she laments.

“It can just be harmful not to eat like she does.”

Tania Valiquette is also clear: a bone broth that contains little protein is not a substantial meal. “It’s liquid, it doesn’t stay in the stomach for long, so we get hungry quickly,” emphasizes the man, who is used to denouncing the diet culture.

Eat every four to six hours?

Studies have shown that intermittent fasting can have some benefits.

However, Tania Valiquette is concerned that such a restriction could lead to cravings in the long term. She explains that a person who practices intermittent fasting has less time in the day to meet all of their nutritional needs, which can lead to deficiencies.

“The body constantly needs energy. If we deprive it of energy for several hours, we can develop fatigue, lack of energy and poor concentration because our brain is working with carbohydrates,” she says.

It’s recommended to have a meal or snack every four to six hours, which is the time it takes for the stomach to empty, she recalls.
