Gwyneth Paltrow’s ski collision trial entered its third day on Thursday.
The Hollywood star and CEO of Goop was accused of colliding with Terry Sanderson, 76, on a ski slope at Deer Valley Resort in Park City in February 2016.
Mr Sanderson alleges Paltrow ran into him in a “full-body punch” and left behind “permanent traumatic brain injuries, four broken ribs, pain, suffering, loss of zest for life, emotional distress and disfigurement”. Meanwhile, Paltrow claims it was Mrs Sanderson who crashed into her – and that he was conscious enough after the accident to email her daughter claiming he was ‘famous’ .
On the third day of the trial in Park City, Utah, psychoneurologist Dr. Alina Fong responded to the defense’s claims that Mr Sanderson exaggerated his symptoms to take advantage of Ms Paltrow’s celebrity status and wealth.
Fong, who opened a clinic in Boston in partnership with Tom Brady, has diagnosed Mr. Sanderson with PCS (persistent post-concussive symptoms) which she believes developed after the accident.
Experts hired by Ms. Paltrow are yet to testify, but when asked about her skepticism about Mr. Sanderson’s diagnosis of PCS, Dr. Fong that she believes she is the only expert who can make the call. Earlier, during opening statements, Ms Paltrow’s attorneys said Mr Sanderson’s allegations were “utter nonsense”.
“There’s a world of difference between going through someone’s medical record in another state or around the world, and seeing that patient crying,” said Dr. Fong in a statement presented to the jury. “I think it’s very easy to criticize someone from a distance and it’s very different when you’re in the trenches with that patient trying to help them.”
She added: “They have a lot of opinions and it just goes to show that they are not concussion experts, particularly traumatic brain injury experts, and if I’m going to be completely honest a lot of their opinions are easily refuted just by going online and looking.” per the CDC’s recommendations for physicians treating concussions.”
Mr. Sanderson is seeking $300,000 from Paltrow while she is seeking $1 in damages and coverage for her attorneys’ fees.

As she was climbing the hill on February 26, 2016, another skier rammed her from behind. She suffered minor injuries, for which, she says, the man immediately apologized. She adds in her lawsuit that she was “shaken and upset.”
