After the murder, the young men fled together to Wisconsin, where they were found a few days later. During his escape Gypsy Rose wrote on social media that her mother had been murdered and that she herself went missing, prompting authorities to investigate the case.

They were arrested and extradited to Missouri, where they were charged with murder. During the trial, Gypsy pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit second-degree murder and was sentenced to 10 years in prison. Godejohn was found guilty of first-degree murder and received a life sentence.
