Last Thursday, Gypsy Rose Blanchard was released from prison after serving seven years for the second-degree murder of her mother, Clauddinnea “Dee Dee” Blanchard. The 32-year-old parolee was picked up by her husband of a year and a half, Ryan Scott Anderson. He is a teacher from Louisiana.
Gypsy Rose served her sentence at the Chillicothe Correctional Center in Missouri. The plan for her first weekend off was to go to a Kansas City Chiefs game and hopefully meet Taylor Swift. TMZ reported that Gypsy Rose was “determined” to meet the singer, who often attends Chiefs games to support her boyfriend Travis Kelce. Apparently, Taylor's song “Eyes Open” helped Gypsy Rose deal with the trauma of her mother's abuse. When she was incarcerated, she mostly bought Taylor's albums with her commissary money.
Unfortunately, the Taylor plans were foiled by local law enforcement. They deemed Gypsy Rose a “security risk” because of her fame and ordered her to leave Missouri as quickly as possible. On Saturday she and her husband complied with this request; They left the state and moved to their home in Louisiana. Gypsy Rose was actually born in Louisiana and her father Rod Blanchard, his wife and their two children still live there. A reunited family!
TMZ says Gypsy Rose was “stunned” about being kicked out of Missouri. She and Ryan bought their Chiefs tickets months ago. But she “gets it” and understands that her Taylor Swift plan was “a long shot” to begin with. Either way, she plans to see Taylor in October when the singer brings her Eras tour to New Orleans.
In the meantime, Gypsy Rose is building her social media presence. A few days ago she posted the header image on Instagram with the caption “First selfie of freedom!” Since then there have been more selfies, pictures from a welcome party with her family and that New Year's Eve kiss with her husband. In the caption, Gypsy Rose tells her followers that they can “see how our love story began” in her upcoming Lifetime docuseries, The Prison Confessions of Gypsy Rose Blanchard (the documentary's camera crew accompanied Ryan as he picked her up from prison ):
And look, she's on TikTok too:
For those who haven't seen Mommy Dead and Dearest, The Act, or the Lifetime movie with Marcia Gay Harden, Dee Dee (probably) had Munchausen as a stand-in. She forced Gypsy Rose to pretend she was disabled and chronically ill, subjected her to unnecessary surgeries and medications, and physically and psychologically abused her.
In 2015, then 23-year-old Gypsy Rose arranged for her boyfriend Nicholas Godejohn to kill Dee Dee so she could escape. A few days after the murder, Gypsy Rose and Nicholas were arrested. Gypsy Rose was ultimately sentenced to ten years in prison for second-degree murder, and Nicholas received a life sentence without parole for first-degree murder.
The comments on Gypsy Rose's social media posts are overwhelmingly supportive. In a selfie, an Instagram user wrote: “She may be out of prison, but she's still in jail 24/7.” Euphoria's Barbie Ferreira even praised her “fresh set” of nails. Still, some people are confused about why the release of Gypsy Rose is being celebrated: “Why are people so happy about it? She helped murder someone.” Forget it, random Instagram user. It's Gypsy Rose.
